Two positions worth checking closely
Striker priorities: Look past the overall rating and compare the attributes behind the chances you normally create, whether that's finishing inside the box, turning under pressure, or passing back into midfield; give extra attention to the weaker foot if you regularly receive the ball facing away from goal; before buying, watch your existing forward for several matches and note what actually breaks down; if you're rushing every shot, another card isn't the first fix; if clean opportunities keep falling onto an uncomfortable foot, you've got a clearer shopping brief; compare several candidates within your budget rather than stretching for the first familiar name, and keep enough coins aside to change your mind after testing the purchase against different opponents with your usual tactics.
Midfield priorities: Separate the jobs before comparing cards, because the player collecting possession near your defenders doesn't need exactly the same strengths as the one arriving near the penalty area; inspect passing, control, defensive attributes, stamina, and available roles against the task you've chosen; try pairing someone who can hold position with someone you're comfortable moving forward, then watch whether your centre stays open whenever possession changes; don't answer every conceded goal by buying another defender; sometimes you're sending both midfielders forward and leaving nobody available for the recovery pass; use a few matches to test that possibility, change one instruction, and only shop once you can describe the missing quality without pointing at the scoreline or blaming the entire starting lineup.
Reality check: A shinier striker won't fix the habit of sprinting straight into the same defender every time you reach the box.
Keep upgrade pressure out of your decisions
It's easy to feel behind when another squad looks stronger than yours, especially after a rough match. Give yourself a smaller target instead: one useful objective, one position to assess, and a session that doesn't turn into scrolling through cards you can't comfortably afford.

Protect the players you still need
Don't submit your bench just because an SBC looks nearly finished. Open the squad, check every selected item, and pause over anything you'd struggle to replace. Work out the remaining cost before buying missing cards, then compare that expense with a direct upgrade you'd actually use. Apply the same patience to packs: decide what you're comfortable spending before opening anything, not after an underwhelming result makes another attempt feel tempting.
Give your squad time to settle
Choose a formation you understand, practise defending without dragging everyone forward, and make one change at a time. Keep your FC Coins available for a clearly identified weakness, rather than spending after every defeat; you'll give yourself a better chance to notice what actually needs fixing.
